Ingredients

Servings:
6
  • 5 ea Sliced potatoes (yukon gold or russet; about 5 potatoes give or take)
  • 3 tbsp Butter
  • 3 tbsp Flour
  • 1 1/2 cups Milk
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Cayenne pepper (to taste)
  • 1 1/2 cups Sharp cheddar cheese (divided)
  • Paprika

Instructions

1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 1.5 quart baking dish (8x8 or 9x9 inch baking dish will work). Sometimes we make these in our individual ramekins.

2

In a small sauce pan on medium heat, melt butter and stir in flour. Cook stirring constantly until nice and smoooooooth.

3

Whisk in the milk very slowly and add the salt and cayenne.

4

Cook sauce on medium until smooth and well combined. It doesn't need to be up to a boil. Just make sure to stir occasionally with a whisk.

5

Reduce heat and stir in 1 cup of the cheddar cheese. Mix it up to a delicious cheesy sauce. Pro-tip: it's okay to want more cheese in there, but don't add it here. You want that sauce to flow easily out of the saucepan.

6

Place a half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour half of cheese sauce over potatoes. Repeat with second layer of potatoes and cheese sauce.

7

Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese on top. Top with some paprika for color.

8

Bake uncovered for about 1 hour at 350Β°F or longer until the potatoes are fork tender, or you just can't stand it anymore, cause they smell good!

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³ Paul's Notes

These are delish and always a crowd favorite! For a wow factor with guests, we sometimes use ramekins instead of a large casserole dish. Gives it that individual flair.
